Incorporating veganism into your beauty routine can be just as difficult as starting a vegan diet, if not more so. There are tons of guides
online about what foods to avoid and which foods to splice into your diet when you're going vegan, but
not so many on how to transition to a routine made up of solely vegan beauty products.
But it is totally possible — and a great way to start is by switching to vegan nail polish.
The majority of vegan nail polishes are five-free, meaning they don't contain the harmful chemicals dibutyl phthalate (DBP), toluene, formaldehyde, formaldehyde resin, or camphor. These ingredients are known irritants, can cause nail discoloration, and are just not great for your fingernails or skin in general. (Formaldehyde, for instance, is a known carcinogen. Gross.)
Of course, you're not suddenly
going to burst into flames if you dare use a non-organic nail
polish; I mean, hey — everything in moderation! But if your favorite
nail polish doesn't contain things that can potentially harm your body and still gives you a rocking manicure, then that's pretty
There are tons of cruelty-free polish lines that you can pick up at your favorite beauty supply store, but it's a little tougher to find nail polishes that are both vegan AND five-free. Here's a list of our faves, all readily available on Amazon.
