Incorporating veganism into your beauty routine can be just as difficult as starting a vegan diet, if not more so. There are tons of guides online about what foods to avoid and which foods to splice into your diet when you're going vegan, but not so many on how to transition to a routine made up of solely vegan beauty products.

But it is totally possible — and a great way to start is by switching to vegan nail polish.

The majority of vegan nail polishes are five-free, meaning they don't contain the harmful chemicals dibutyl phthalate (DBP), toluene, formaldehyde, formaldehyde resin, or camphor. These ingredients are known irritants, can cause nail discoloration, and are just not great for your fingernails or skin in general. (Formaldehyde, for instance, is a known carcinogen. Gross.)

Of course, you're not suddenly going to burst into flames if you dare use a non-organic nail polish; I mean, hey — everything in moderation! But if your favorite nail polish doesn't contain things that can potentially harm your body and still gives you a rocking manicure, then that's pretty cool.

There are tons of cruelty-free polish lines that you can pick up at your favorite beauty supply store, but it's a little tougher to find nail polishes that are both vegan AND five-free. Here's a list of our faves, all readily available on Amazon.

Mineral Fusion Nail Polish in Jewel

The sleek, thin formula of Mineral Fusion makes for easy application, and many reviewers on Amazon rave about how long-lasting the formula is: "It really LASTS!! I seriously wash my hands a TON (germophobe) and it holds up
without chips for a week," writes one. As a fellow obsessive hand-washer, I can personally testify to how badly hot water can affect your manicure over time, so this sounds like a win to me. (And damn, look how bright that pink is!)

Cirque Colors Crème Nail Polish in Memento Mori

This cruelty-free crème polish is a one-coat wonder: Not only is it vegan, but it's also self-leveling and opaque! If you're a nail art buff, then you probably already know that YouTuber SimplyNailogical dubbed it the best black polish of all time (which comes as no surprise, TBH).

Black Dahlia Lacquer

Black Dahlia Lacquer in Capital Rose Garden

Like most organic nail polishes, the Black Dahlia Lacquer line doesn’t contain the big-five chemicals that can be harmful to your health. This means your nails and the surrounding skin are less likely to have a bad reaction, and the former are more likely to stay hydrated and strong.

This shade in particular isn’t just dazzling, but it’s also hypoallergenic.

Karma Organic Non-Allergenic Nail Polish in BORDEAUX

The Karma brand is very up-front about what chemicals they use in their formula, including colourants, fragrances, glues, and so on. And just like Black Dahlia Lacquer, they’ve skipped over the main chemicals that can cause irritation and generate a nasty toxic smell. Their organic hypoallergenic nail polishes come in 20 different colors, the classic red "BORDEAUX" being my fave.

Health is stunning dark polish with violet iridescence that is perfect for a night on the town. Amazon reviewers love how it doesn't have that strong plastic smell often associated with nail polish. (That's all thanks to the lack of toluene, by the way!)
