9 Dates You Should Totally Take Yourself On, Even If You're Partnered Up

Hanging out with yourself is the best. You don't have to make any small talk, you don't have to worry about whether you said something unbearably awkward 47 minutes ago, and you can go home and nap whenever you feel like it!

Even if you're partnered up, you should still take yourself out solo every once in a while. It's a great time to reflect on life and appreciate yourself.

However, it can be a little intimidating to just go out in public and do stuff without other people around as, like, a shield. Here are 9 activities that are great and not awkward — even for people who have never been on a solo date before.

1. The Park

Don't underestimate the simple stuff. An excursion to the park on a sunny day is pretty much the best date activity period, whether it be solo, platonic or romantic. Going to the park by yourself is the best, because it's full of other people who are also alone and there's some truly great people-watching. Plus, there's no time limit. Grab a book, a blanket, and some wine, and enjoy!

2. The Movies

2. The Movies

Stick with me here. You may think of the movies as an inherently social place, but you actually can't even hold a conversation at the movies! It's a very solitary activity. Nobody pays attention to who is sitting with whom in the dark, so you can really just slip in, enjoy the movie, shed an ugly tear or two, and slip out. Splurge on your favorite movie-day treat and enjoy the cinema, you deserve it, dahhhling.

3. A Long Walk

3. A Long Walk

Taking a long walk is one of my favorite date activities because moving around helps me feel less anxious. Taking a long walk by myself, on the other hand, is even better because I can put in earphones,  walk aimlessly and really dive deep into my own head. If you live in a city, explore a neighborhood you haven't been to yet and get lost. If you live near nature, take a long walk someplace green. It'll feel good, promise.

4. Read At A Cafe

4. Read At A Cafe

Do you like books? Do you want to spruce up your daily "read books and hide from people" routine? Take the book to a cafe, order a fancy-ass drink, and sit there. Bam. Genius. Once you find a cafe that you like, you'll actually sort of dread going home (hard to believe, I know).

5. The Beach

THE BEACH. If it's at all feasible for you to go to the beach alone, please do it sometime. The beach is such a reflective, calming place, and although it's fun to go there with a group of people, it's also REALLY nice to go there alone and allow yourself to fully, deeply chill out all the way down to your bones.

6. Go To Lunch

6. Go To Lunch

Eating alone in public is kinda scary, I know. I avoided it for years. But going to lunch is hands-down the best time to go eat alone because tons of people eat lunch alone on their break, so you won't be the only one doing it. You can bring a book or journal and nobody even bats an eye, trust me. It feels fancy and nice, like you're giving yourself a little treat in the middle of your day.

7. A Museum

7. A Museum

Okay, listen. Museums are a pretty popular thing for couples and friends to do with each other, and it doesn't make any sense. Everybody browses at a different pace, and you can't really discuss the material because you have to whisper. Museums should be appreciated alone. When you go by yourself, you can skip the boring stuff and go at your own pace with no guilt. It's perfect.

8. The Spa

8. The Spa

The ultimate treat yo'self activity: The spa. Who can afford a couples massage anyway, guys? A solo massage will do ya just fine. If you a fly gal, get your nails done. Get a pedicure, get a manicure, get your hair did. This is the Law of Missy Elliott, I don't make the rules.

9. Thrifting

9. Thrifting

I personally hate shopping, but I am told that this is a very fulfilling activity for the sartorial-minded. Similar to going to a museum, going solo allows you to go at your own pace without that moment of panic when you realize you have no idea where your friend is. And you can take however long you like in the dressing room! Selfies for everyone!
