North West — Kim Kardashian and Kanye West's first born — just turned 5! Happy birthday, Northie!
What better way to celebrate than with some good old-fashioned mom shaming? Yesterday, Kim and her friend Jonathan Cheban took North and her little friend to bask in sweet treats in New York City. The now five-year-old rocked a pink Adidas tracksuit, some Yeezys, and a candy necklace, as children often do. But what stood out most to the internet was her hairstyle.
Typically, North rocks her natural-textured, curly hair. It's adorable. However, for this specific outing, North had an Ariana Grande-esque, straightened, high ponytail cascading down her back.
Her locks have definitely undergone some sort of heat treatment to smooth out her natural curls and people are not happy about it. Mom shamers came out of the woodwork to criticize Kim for this level of primping, which could potentially damage North's hair.
It's about more than just potential hair damage, though. Women of color have often faced pressures to treat their hair, rather than embrace its natural texture. Kim even got lessons on how to braid black hair on an episode of KUWTK in an effort to help North embrace hers. So, people were more than a little ticked off at her choice to straighten it.
Considering Kim's own controversial history with cultural appropriation, the Twitterverse was very quick to jump on the judgment train.
Of course, there are some fans coming to her defense, as it's ultimately Kardashian's call on how she style's her own daughter's hair. Though you may not agree with her choices, it's not your place to judge.
North certainly looks adorable either way. However, Kim knows how powerful her influence is and needs to recognize the message this could potentially send to other young girls with beautiful, natural curls.
