In the newest episode, she sits down with Jaden, 19, as well as her daughter Willow, 17, and her mom Adrienne Banfield-Jones to discuss her parenting style. It is incredibly eye opening for us mere mortals, to say the least.
But the one part that really stood out is when Jada recounts the story of Jaden wanting to be emancipated. "At 15 years old, Jaden, and I remember this day specifically. It’s probably one of the most heartbreaking moments of my life," the 46-year-old actress recalls. "You got to a point where you told me straight up, you were like, 'Mom, I have to leave here to live my life.'"
Although he never went through with the emancipation, Jada explains what happened in the moment. "I remember thinking to myself, as devastated as I was, I was like, 'He’s right. The time is now. He’s 15. It’s time for him to leave the house.'"
She continued, explaining why she would've given him the freedom to choose, regardless of how devastated she was. "Every child needs something different," she says. "Being in this lifestyle, in this world, is a bubble, and he wanted out. I understood that because I didn’t have the bubble. I knew what having my freedom outside the bubble, what I gained from that. I knew the sooner I let him go, the faster he was going to come back."
Jaden and Willow both have careers of their own now, and while they're both still teenagers, they're incredibly mature. Even though they no longer share a roof with parents Jada Pinkett and Will Smith, they still need quality time with mom and dad, as noted by Jaden in the episode.
Back in 2013, Jaden got real about his decision to ultimately forego the emancipation on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. "See, here’s the thing: I’m not going anywhere. The thing that people don’t get is everything at his [Will Smith's] house is free," he told her.
Wise choice, dear Jaden. Wise choice.
