The little ladies of Girl Scout Troop 6000, all of whom are based out of New York City homeless shelters, are hosting their first ever cookie sale!
The group formed in March of last year with the support of Mayor Bill de Balsio's office and the Department of Homeless Shelters. Their eventual goal is to reach over 500 girls, but the more than 20 who have mobilized so far is a great start.
The troop will be selling cookies for two hours on Friday, April 13, but if you're not near Union Square you can also support their efforts here:
Of course, these girl's relationship with the Girl Scouts goes far beyond selling Thin Mints. "The biggest impact that we see and when you talk to the girls you’ll hear them say is that they belong to something, they have a sisterhood within the other Girl Scouts,” according to the CEO of the Girl Scouts of Greater New York. “They talk to other girls who may be in their same situation who feel alone, and they feel like they have a stronger sense of community and belonging overall.”
This isn't the first time Troop 6000 has made headlines. Back in December Jimmy Fallon donated over $50,000 to the group (get the tissues ready before clicking play):
Their goal is to sell 6000 boxes — so go support these girls and buy some cookies! You won't regret it!
